Castanets are wooden percussion instruments, belonging to the idiophone family. They are instruments with a very long history, whose origins are untraceable. However, archaeological findings show that they appeared in ancient Greece, Egypt, and Phoenicia as early as ancient times. In modern-day Spain, where castanets have become an important accompanying instrument in folk music, their Moorish ancestors also began using them as early as the 1st century AD.
